Verifying support for a video file

Questions

Are all videos compatible with iPad also compatible with Roku?

It's impractical to test each video on Roku. It would be easier to verify the format either on the desktop, or by playing it in the DS Video iPad app.

File properties can be reported in VLC.

Supported formats

.mkv can be supported, but it is simply a wrapper for any number of codecs. Support depends on the underlying codec.

I believe that .mp4 is supported across the board, but that needs verification. Handbrake generates .mp4 files.

.m4v ? Handbrake also outputs in .m4v. What is the practical difference between .m4v and .mp4?
