I believe that `.mp4` is supported across the board, but that needs verification. Handbrake generates `.mp4` files.

`.m4v` ? Handbrake also outputs in `.m4v`. What is the practical difference between `.m4v` and `.mp4`?

Verifying support for a video file

Platforms

  • Roku
  • iPad
  • desktop (It's much simpler to use VLC to play back on desktop.)

Questions

Are all videos compatible with iPad also compatible with Roku?

It's impractical to test each video on Roku. It would be easier to verify the format either on the desktop, or by playing it in the DS Video iPad app.

File properties can be reported in VLC.

Supported formats

.mkv can be supported, but it is simply a wrapper for any number of codecs. Support depends on the underlying codec.

.m4v With Output Settings > Container: Mp4 selected, Handbrake will generate a file with a .m4v extension.

I believe that .mp4 is supported across the board, but that needs verification.

What is the practical difference between .m4v and .mp4?

Unsupported formats

  • .avi
  • .divx ?
