Use the Thunderbird app to retrieve Gmail messages.

SMTP Configuration[edit]

Thunderbird > Settings > Account Settings > Outgoing Server (SMTP) > Edit SMTP Server

With that configured, Thunderbird will be synced with the Gmail mail server.

Deleting attachments[edit]

  • Thunderbird > Inbox
    • Quick Filter (button at the top right of the message list) > click the Attachments button
    • Sort option (to the right of the Quick Filter button) > Sort By > Size, Descending
  • Click on a message in the list
    • Click on the attachment at the bottom of the message preview pane
    • right click > Detach... to save the message before removing it
    • Or right click > Delete to remove the attachment without saving it
