Use the Thunderbird app to retrieve Gmail messages.
SMTP Configuration[edit]
Thunderbird > Settings > Account Settings > Outgoing Server (SMTP) > Edit SMTP Server
With that configured, Thunderbird will be synced with the Gmail mail server.
Deleting attachments[edit]
- Thunderbird > Inbox
- Quick Filter (button at the top right of the message list) > click the Attachments button
- Sort option (to the right of the Quick Filter button) > Sort By > Size, Descending
- Click on a message in the list
- Click on the attachment at the bottom of the message preview pane
- right click > Detach... to save the message before removing it
- Or right click > Delete to remove the attachment without saving it
