Prevent user from installing software

Control use of Windows Installer

  • Type gpedit.msc in the Windows Search Box.
  • Computer Configurations > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Installer
  • Right click Turn off Windows Installer (in the righthand pane) > Edit
  • Select Enabled in the top pane.
  • Select an option in the bottom pane: For non-managed applications only, Always, or Never
  • Click Ok to save.

This only controls software installed through the Windows Installer. Software can be still be installed through other methods.
