Overview

Images are made available to Adobe Portfolio through synched Adobe Lightroom Classic collections.

Managing albums in Adobe Portfolio

Everything is called a "page" in Portfolio. However there are distinctions between pages.

  • A collection of images can serve as a page, in which case when you visit the page you are presented with a list of images.
  • A typical Portfolio "page" is a collection of collections.
So if you create a new "page" in Portfolio, it will expect collections to be added to the new page. When the page is presented on the front-end, each image is a cover image for the collection, and clicking on that cover image will lead to a page will all the images in the collection.
  • A Portfolio "page" can also be a "landing page" which is an informational page with no images.

Creating a landing page that is a series of images

The goal here is to have a landing page that is NOT a series of cover images for collections.

  • Create a separate collection in Lightroom that will define the images displayed on the landing page. Then add that collection as a new Portfolio "page" in an existing Portfolio "collection." (Isn't it wonderful that the terminology is perfecting inverted between Lightroom and Portfolio!)
  • Edit the title of the page to the text that should be displayed on the home page.
  • When editing pages in Portfolio, click on the gear to the right of the page title and select "Make home page"
  • Edit the "Logo" for the site and make sure that it links to the page serving as the landing page.

Syncing in Lightroom

Caveats

Only one Lightroom catalog can be used to sync. For the purposes of Adobe Portfolio, this is the catalog named "portfolio."

Only non-smart collections can be synced.

Workflow

In any of the catalogs containing work to be included in the online portfolio (e.g. "animation", "creative", etc.) select the images that will be included. Give them the keyword "portfolio".

See the "animation" catalog for examples. There are smart collections with the following criteria:

  • The collections are broken down by show, so Folder must match the name of the show in each of the collections.
  • Keyword contains "portfolio"
  • Keyword does not contain "needs work". This tag indicates files that need adjustments before being included in the portfolio.
  • Rating is one star or higher. (A quick way to exclude images.)
  • Cropped is true. This applies to background paintings where typically there is a frame built into the file with show and episode information.

Use the collection to make a selection of images that will be exported in a format suitable for the online portfolio. Export using the preset named "animation portfolio." This preset saves the images in [NAS_SHARE]:/creative/animation/portfolio/

Open the "portfolio" Lightroom catalog. This catalog contains the files saved in [NAS_SHARE]:/creative/animation/portfolio/ and other portfolio image repositories.

Sync the portfolio directory. This will update corresponding smart collections in this catalog. Go to the smart collection of interest, select the new images or all the images and drop them in the corresponding "non-smart" collection. This step is necessary because smart collections cannot be synced.

Lightroom will sync the new files, which then will be available to Adobe Portfolio.

Updating and adding images

Portfolio holds onto the existing images. Any updates that happen inside Lightroom on the desktop need to be manually added to the portfolio.

  • Edit the portfolio.
  • Navigate to the image grid.
  • Click on the tab at the top of the image grid, select Manage Images.
  • Delete the old version of the image.
  • Click Add images.
  • Select Lightroom. This will open all the images that have been synced from Lightroom.
  • Select the image to add to the portfolio.
