Original notes

Downloaded drivers from http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/support/supAdvice.jsp?BV_UseBVCookie=yes&noteoid=94205&type=highlights on July 15, 2009.

On that page, under “Matte Papers”, Premium Presentation Paper Matte translated to MatteHvyWtR1.exe when it was downloaded.

Then, I think this driver translates to “SPR800 Matte Paper-HW” as the ICC printer profile option when printing from Photoshop.

Other Options on that page:

  • Glossy Papers
    • Premium Glossy Photo Paper
    • Premium Photo Paper Semi-Gloss
    • Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster
  • Matte Papers
    • Ultra Premium Presentation Matte Paper
    • Premium Presentation Matte Paper

Notes dated December 11, 2010

Printing out the cover for a book (Minty’s birthday present) based on this image:

In Photoshop these are the settings that I selected:

  • Printer: Epson Stylus Photo R800
  • Color Management: Document (profile: Adobe RGB (1998))
  • Color Handling: Photoshop Manages Colors
  • Printer Profile: SPR800 Enhanced Matte /SPR800 Matte Paper-HW
  • Rendering Intent: Relative Colormetric / Perceptual

These combinations gave good results. I tried both options under Printer Profile and Rendering Intent. With this artwork it didn’t seem to make any difference which of those options I chose. They all came out the same.

Notes dated March 7, 2011

One thing that I noticed was that if you change the color profile of the document in Photoshop before printing the document that the preview in the Photoshop print dialog matches more closely what you will get from the printer.

So for example if you’re going to print using the “SPR800 Enhanced Matte” printer profile, update the document’s color space to that profile before printing.

Trying to print out some artwork on Strathmore 400 Series Recycled Paper. There seems to be some new options in the Photoshop print dialog:

  • Match Print Colors With this the preview shows the colors as they are in the document. With it on the preview shows the colors as they should look coming out of the printer.
  • Gamut Warning Grays out any unprintable colors.
  • Show Paper White.
