GA4 Custom Dimensions

Objective

With a view_item event with a custom parameter, location which can have one of 3 values: "teaser," "preview," or "details," create a GA4 report that breaks down the view_item event by location value.

• GA4 > Explore > New "free form" report
  • Add "Event Name"" as dimension
  • Add "Event Count" as metric
  • Filter by Event Name where name is "view_item"

Now add the custom dimension.

• GA4 > Admin (gear icon at lower left) > Data Display (in the central area) > Custom Definitions > Create Custom Dimension (button)
  • Enter descriptive name and description
  • Scope: Event
  • Event Parameter: "location" which is automatically included in the options of the dropdown. GA4 puts all detected parameters in the menu.

It takes 24-48 hours for GA4 to populate data for the new dimension.

• Return to Explore.
  • Add new Dimension
  • Select Custom tab at the top and the custom dimension should be displayed. It not available until its data has been populated (24-48 hours).
