Using Synology NAS To Backup Mac, NAS And Other Volumes
Overview[edit]
Create backups of files stored on Synology drives using Hyper Backup. (Package Center > Installed > Hyper Backup > Open)
NAS Backups[edit]
Managing existing backup tasks[edit]
Backup tasks run on the NAS that is the source of files that are being backed up.
Open Hyper Backup to manage existing backup tasks.
Backing up apps and app data[edit]
Under Task Settings click on the Application tab.
In the Surveillance Station summary it states that the backup includes recordings, camera settings, and system settings. So with app selected, it's not necessary to perform a separate back up of the files in /Volume1/surveillance.
Similarly, if the MariaDB app is selected, "the backup includes databases of the package and its dependent packages." A separate backup task devoted to those database files is redundant.
Some apps are unavailable while their backups are being performed.
Time Machine[edit]
Here is a good article on how to configure a Synology NAS as a backup disk for Mac's Time Machine.
- Create a shared volume on the NAS where Time Machine backups will be stored.
- Create a user dedicated to Time Machine backups.
- Set a limit on the amount of disk space Time Machine is allowed.
- Grant the user access to AFB and SMB network protocols.
- On the Mac > System Settings > General > Time Machine
- Add a backup destination, using the NAS volume, and also using the user account devoted to backups to connect to that volumne.
